Fighting the mud
& rain. An all-terrain drilling rig ( Left) is used to
access new well locations, placed around the Lewiston Reservoir and on the
Tuscarora Nation.
|
| Drilling through topsoil (right) and into the first five feet of bedrock to set an 8” well casing. |
|
| The well casing
will set for 24 hours before continuing to drill.
A 5’ core sample is taken from the upper Lockport Dolmite. (Left) |

Examining the first
core for fractures in the geology
below us. Each fracture
in the core may be monitored by individual 2” wells. |
| Water and air are
injected in to the well to determine which fractures may transmit the flow
of ground water. The wells are
designed to study the Lockport Dolomite, at depths of 30 to 100
feet on the Nation. Below the Lockport formation lies an impermeable
Rochester Shale formation. |
